ARTIST PROFILE: Sylvia Carewe (1906–1981) was a versatile American modernist painter and poet known for her bold, experimental approach to various media. Born in New York City to Russian immigrant parents, she studied at Columbia University and further refined her skills under masters such as Hans Hofmann and Yasuo Kuniyoshi, as well as at the renowned printmaking studio Atelier 17. Carewe was particularly celebrated for her "nocturnal" paintings of New York City and her pioneering work in modern tapestry design; she was one of the first American women to create cartoons for the Aubusson tapestry works in France. Her diverse output included "blown paintings"—assemblages of found objects overlaid with spray paint—as well as oils, etchings, and lithographs. During her lifetime, her work was exhibited internationally and acquired by major institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and MoMA.
