ARTIST PROFILE: Flora Natapoff (1936–2020) was an influential Abstract Expressionist painter and educator whose work was defined by powerful, heavily layered collages of urban landscapes and construction sites. Educated at Cornell and UC Berkeley, she integrated influences from the New York School, European Modernism, and Chinese painting into a dynamic style that often repurposed fragments of her own previous works to reflect the multifaceted nature of reality. Beyond her studio practice in locations ranging from London to Umbria, Natapoff was a significant figure in academia, teaching at Harvard University from 1974 to 1982 and serving as the Director of the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts. Her late-career transition toward intricate, grid-like urban scenes inspired by Chinese scrolls cemented her reputation for "formal but dynamic authority," a legacy preserved in prominent galleries and reviews.
