ARTIST PROFILE: Ted Seth Jacobs (1927–2019) was a profoundly influential American artist, author, and educator who became a central figure in the late 20th-century revival of realist painting. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Jacobs studied at the Art Students League under masters like Robert Beverly Hale, eventually developing a philosophy of "Restructured Realism" that moved away from mere photographic imitation toward a deeper understanding of how light, form, and nature interact. He was a founding member of the faculty at the New York Academy of Art and spent decades teaching at the Art Students League and the Fashion Institute of Technology. Jacobs' influence extended internationally when he established the Ecole Albert Defois in France, where he mentored a generation of artists in the nuances of light and the organic structure of the human figure. Jacobs was renowned for his meticulous draftsmanship and his ability to capture the "breathing" quality of his subjects, whether in portraiture, still life, or landscape. His technical approach was grounded in the belief that an artist must see and understand the underlying geometry and rhythmic flow of natural forms rather than simply copying outlines. Beyond his canvas work, he authored several seminal texts on artistic theory, including Light for the Artist and Drawing with Life, which remain essential resources for students of representational art. By the time of his passing in 2019, Jacobs had left an indelible mark on the art world, having successfully bridged the gap between traditional academic methods and a modern, sensitive exploration of the visual world.
