Marmian Williams Tharp Royen was a native of Akron, Ohio who came from an old artistic family. She studied painting with John Anthony Rock and Marston Dean Hodgin and earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio in 1949. Thereafter she was an Assistant Art Professor at Miami under Marston Hodgin. Mrs. Royen principally painted genre subjects and portraits in oil and charcoal. She also worked in the graphic arts in silkscreen, etching and woodcut. In addition she was a sculptor and designed original puppets. In her later career she was an illustrator for Triumph Magazine. Over the years Mrs. Royen exhibited in art shows in Ohio and in the Washington. DC area. She was awarded first prize at the Montgomery County Civic Art Show for her painting "Veridian" in 1963.
