AMERICAN SCHOOL (19th century). PORTRAIT OF A LADY IN A PLUMED TURBAN, A MEMBER OF THE TALBOT FAMILY, oil on canvas - Unframed, 25 in. x 20 in.

Elizabeth Jane Oswald, by descent.
Family history relates that Edmund Winne (1832-1908) of Albany, NY, married Mary Frances Talbot (1839-1913) of Richmond, Virginia, in 1857.

Lined, pulling away from mount along right side and especially upper right corner. Losses to canvas in upper right corner, also near all corners. 2 in. tear near upper right corner, Surface scratches near left side, horizontal scratches through her hair and hat and vertical scratch in her neck. 3 in apparent repaired tear with losses through left proper eyebrow and above her left eye. Fine craquelure. UV: Heavy varnish makes detection difficult, but apparent areas of inpainting in background, on left side of hat, and possibly in face and neck.
