PENNSYLVANIA PACKET NEWSPAPER: SHAY'S REBELLION & A SALEM MERCURY NEWSPAPER: GEO. WASHINGTON/CONSTITUTIONAL . CONVENTIONC, Philadelphia, February 15, 1787. 'The Pennsylvania Packet was established as a weekly on October 28, 1771, by Philadelphia printer John Dunlap. The Packet had been highly prosperous even during the dark days of the American Revolution and strongly supported the patriot cause and separation from Britain. On September 21, 1784, the Packet became the nations' first successful daily newspaper.

This issue contains a letter signed, in type, by Daniel Shays to General Benjamin Lincoln regarding a cessation of hostilities between the two opposing forces. Shays was leading a rebellion caused by the terrible economic conditions in the state and the failure of the legislature to address the problems. News that Lincolns' forces had captured many of Shays' insurrgents and forced others to flee. Shays soon fled to Vermont and was later pardoned in 1788.'

This issue contains topics include General Lincoln's forces against the rebels in Massachusetts, together with other news, commentary, and advertisements. 4 pp. folio, vertical fold and quartering folds; in folder with gilt embossing to cover. Accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity.

The second folio contains a Salem Mercury issue, dated June 12, 1787 which include articles related to George Washington and the Constitutional Convention and news from various states and abroad. Also 44 ppf, vertical ford and quartering folds, in folder with gilt embossing to cover.
