NORTHERN CONTINENTAL SCHOOL (18th century or earlier). Portrait of Justus van Meerstraeten, Oil on canvas. Portrait after the original painting by Anthony van Dyck (Flemish, 1599 - 1641) dated 1634-1635. Justus van Meerstraeten was a jurist and prominent member of the Brussels magistracy and mayor of the city in 1636. Picture frame has a plate indicating the painting is the "Portrait of an Imperiale Marquese" and there are two attached verso labels indicating the painting is of the "Duke of Leincester" (possibly either the Duke of Leinster or Leicester) and a second 18th or 17th label with an incription that read "Van Dyck" and the artist's dates. Unsigned. Framed.
