ALBERT MARQUET (French, 1875 - 1947). Le Pont-Neuf, 1906, Oil on board. Signed and dated lower right hand corner. Verso pencil annotation provides title, artist's name and dates the artwork to "5.06." Colorful painting captures a view of an arched stone bridge spanning the River Seine and executed in a style reminiscent of Fauvism. The composition is dominated by bold, non-naturalistic colors, featuring a fiery orange and warm pink sky that dramatically contrasts with the cool blues and greens used for the buildings lining the far bank and river below. The bridge itself is rendered in warm ochres and yellows, highlighting its massive stone arches, and it is bustling with small, dark figures and red and black vehicles. A small, distinctive round structure, a newspaper stand (?). sits prominently in the foreground where the river meets the bank, rendered in bright white and red. Framed. - board: 16 x 20 inches; frame: 19.5 x 23 inches Estimate $4,000-6,000
