ARTIST PROFILE: Dieudonne Pluviose is a notable Haitian-born artist. Born: 1928, in Cap-Haitien, Nord Department, Haiti. Style: He is known as a primitive painter who first emerged in the 1960s. During the 1970s, he made significant progress in his composition, technique, and overall style, characterized by his bold use of vibrant colors. Subject Matter: His paintings often illustrate the everyday life of the Haitian people in the Cap-Haitien style, including subjects like: Market scenes; Village scenes; Cockfights; and Haitian celebrations like Mardi Gras (Defile Kanaval). Recognition: His work is recognized in the book Haiti Voodoo Kingdom to Modern Riviera by John Allen Franciscus.
