ARTIST PROFILE: Daniele Buzzi (1890–1974) was a versatile Swiss engineer, architect, and graphic designer who became a foundational figure in the development of Ticinese poster art. Though he was born in Locarno and spent much of his career in architecture and engineering, a period of physical disability between 1942 and 1948 led him to master the art of self-taught lithography. Buzzi is best remembered for his iconic travel posters produced from the 1920s through the 1950s, which utilized a vibrant, Fauvist-inspired color palette to romanticize the Swiss landscape. His most notable graphic works include influential designs for the St. Gothard Railway (1924) and the Furka-Oberalp Railway (1926), as well as numerous promotional pieces for Locarno and Lake Maggiore that helped define the visual identity of Swiss tourism in the mid-20th century.
