ARTIST PROFILE: Daniele Buzzi (1890–1974) was a multifaceted Swiss engineer, architect, and graphic artist who is celebrated as a foundational figure of Ticinese poster art. Born in Locarno and passing away in Lausanne, Buzzi spent the majority of his career in technical fields until a period of physical disability between 1942 and 1948 led him to master self-taught lithography and graphic design. He is best known for his extensive body of travel posters produced from the 1920s through the 1950s, which frequently employed a vibrant, Fauvist-inspired color palette to capture the "Mediterranean allure" of southern Switzerland. His iconic works include promotional designs for the St. Gothard Electric Railway (1924), the Simplon Rail Line (1925), and numerous celebrated depictions of Lugano and Locarno. Today, Buzzi's posters are highly valued by collectors for their ability to merge modernist design sensibilities with a romanticized, sun-drenched vision of the Swiss landscape.
