Sale 28 Lot 1445

GEORGE II BUREAU- BOOKCASE. 18th century, in two parts, burled walnut. Upper case with molded-arched pediment above mirrored door flanked by fluted columns with Corinthian capitals; the lower section has slant-front desk with book-matched veneer, opening to hidden well and fitted interior above two long drawers on acanthus-carved cabriole legs and claw-and-ball feet. - Case: 47 in. x 27 in. x 10 3/4 in.; Desk: 38 1/2 in. x 25 in. x 18 in.
Estimate $4,000-5,000

Purchased from Stair & Co., New York

The bureau-bookcase is in very good overall condition. As with many early 18th century pieces, one would naturally expect 1. ) slight restoration to the back paneling, 2.) replaced glass and hardware, 3.) movement in the secondary wood and some restorations to veneer cracks. These do not affect the overall quality of this piece. We discovered two losses to the applied molding on the upper crown and proper left pilaster.

Sold for $8,200
