RARE LEVIN TARR, BALTIMORE, FEDERAL INLAID MAHOGANY OCTAGONAL WINE COOLER. Circa 1800. Hinged, octagonal top with crossbanding and line inlay centers compass star within circular, banded reserve; tapering, paneled sides with mid-band of diagonally checked rope inlay; banded base; four tapering, splayed square legs with bellflower inlay raised on conforming brass capped castors; hinged brass shaped oval side handles; gadrooned oval knob pull; brass shaped, applied escutcheon; lead-lined well. Original condition. - Height, 23 1/2 in. ; Top width, 19 3/4 in. (overall with handles) ; Depth, 18 1/2 in.

Provenance: decended in family of present owner from her grandfather Albert Dale Terry, Jr., of Ottawa, Illinois, who acquired the cooler from Dickenson Bishop and his second wife Sydney Boyce. Dickenson Bishop was a survivor of the Titanic, and Sydney Boyce was the daughter of W.D. Boyce, founder of the Boy Scouts of America and a newspaper publisher from Chicago. The Boyce family was a prominent 18th-19th century Baltimore family.

Original condition; never repaired or refinished. No gouges or surface scratches; some inlay loss. Interior elements of lockplate missing.
