TWO-PANEL JAPANESE CALLIGRAPHIC SCREENS BY MATSUZAKA KIAN (1891-1959) . Matsuzaka Kian (1891-1959) was born in Okayama and entered the Shingon sect of the Buddhist priesthood at a young age. He rose to a high rank, and was well known for his calligraphy, having studied first under Toyama Hashu before expanding his repertoire with the styles of Jiun and Jakugon. He was called the Ryokan of Now (Ima-Ryokan) - Each mounted scroll: app 26 1/4 in x 52 in.; each panel: app. 36 in. x 68 1/2 in. Fully extended: app. 72 in.
