IVORY COAST BAULE BICEPHALOUS JE MASK. Baule double-faced mask from the Ivory Coast used in ceremonial dances. These masks often represent twins or the duality of a person's personality. The mask is carved from wood and features two faces. While the general proportions of the faces are the same, the detailing in terms of the beard and the hairstyle is slightly different. It is part of the Baule theatrical tradition known as "Mblo". Some interpretations suggest that the two faces represent male and female, with the presence of a three-section beard indicating the male face. These masks are worn during events such as the "je" celebration, which purifies the village after a death. - Height: 14.5 inches. Estimate $300-380
