TWO SIGNED HILDA CORIZ AND LORETTA NAVASIE SMALL DECORATED POTTERY NATIVE AMERICAN JARS OR BOWLS. Left hand jar signed by: HILDA CORIZ (1918-2007), a a well-known potter from Santo Domingo Pueblo (Kewa Pueblo). The right jar is signed with a large painted frog with the letter "L" which is by the Hopi-Tewa Potter LORETTA NAVASIE. The bowl on the left features a distinct Black-on-White design with a strong red band at the bottom. The prominent figure is a stylized bird with a black body and sharp features, surrounded by stylized plant life. This type of motif-a bird in a setting-is common across several Pueblos (like Zia or Santo Domingo). The Right bowl uses a white/buff slip with designs in dark brown and brownish-red, featuring large, sweeping geometric and curvilinear patterns that cover the surface.
ARTIST PROFILE: Hilda Coriz (1918-2007) was a well-known potter from Santo Domingo Pueblo (Kewa Pueblo). Santo Domingo Style: Kewa (Santo Domingo) pottery is known for its heavy black, red, and white/buff designs, often using bold, sweeping, and interlocking geometric or floral elements, which matches the visual style of this jar. Hilda was married to Arthur Coriz. Both Hilda and Arthur are now deceased. Arthur and Hilda collaborated on pottery production until his death in 1998. Arthur had learned the processes by watching Hilda and her brother Robert Tenorio. Arthur and Hilda made pottery in the traditional manner, using natural clays and vegetal paints.
ARTIST PROFILE: Hopi-Tewa artist LORETTA NAVASIE Koshiwa is a granddaughter of Paqua Naha (1st Frog Woman) and daughter of Joy Navasie (2nd and current Frog Woman). She produces pottery of the white-slipped variety, as does her mother. Her hallmark is the same frog used by her mother, with the addition of the letter L; now many carry just the Frog symbol.
