ARTIST PROFILE: Jack Perlmutter was a prominent self-taught painter and printmaker who became a central figure in the Washington, D.C. art scene from the 1940s through the 1980s. Despite his lack of formal higher education, Perlmutter’s mastery of lithography—honed while creating nautical charts for the Navy—led him to prestigious roles as a Professor at the Corcoran Gallery of Art and a curator for the Cosmos Club. Known as an "abstract realist," he captured the energy of urban life through bold, semi-abstract depictions of cityscapes, bridges, and crowds. His storied career included commissions for NASA to document space missions and earned his work a permanent place in world-class institutions such as the National Gallery of Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
