ARTIST PROFILE: Martin Peikert (1901–1975) was a legendary Swiss graphic artist and painter whose work defined the visual language of Swiss Alpine tourism during the mid-20th century. After graduating from the École des Beaux-Arts in Geneva in 1921, he developed an imaginative and unconventional style that broke away from traditional design school standards, often featuring vibrant colors and idealized landscapes full of "exuberant joie de vivre". He is best known for his iconic travel posters for high-altitude destinations such as Gstaad, St. Moritz, and Zermatt, as well as his commercial work, which includes the famous "Villars cow" logo for Villars chocolate. Peikert frequently used his first wife, Henriette, as a muse and model, depicting her as a fashionable, energetic figure skiing or relaxing in the snow, which added a youthful and modern allure to the Swiss mountain experience. Today, his posters are among the most sought-after in the vintage market, celebrated for their clever compositions and their enduring role in the "collective unconscious" of Swiss travel history.
