TWO DECORATED NATIVE AMERICAN SMOKING PIPES, CALUMETS. Two decorated Native American smoking pipes (often referred to as Calumets in a ceremonial context). The pipes have a separate bowl and stem-and have rich decoration. The bowl is carved from Catlinite (also known as pipestone), a soft, reddish-brown stone found primarily in Minnesota. Catlinite is sacred to many Plains tribes (like the Sioux/Lakota) and is the traditional material for ceremonial pipes. A central section of the stem is wrapped with intricate loom beadwork. The geometric patterns use a variety of colors, including blue, yellow, red, black, and white. This style of beadwork is characteristic of Plains and Plateau tribes. - Length (longest one): 19 inches.
