GILTWOOD FRAMED PLANISFERO DEL MONDO VECCHIO, VICENZO MARIA CORONELLI 1691, Vincenzo Coronelli (Italian, 1650-1718), Published Venice, 1691. Giltwood framed, of the period map of the western hemispheres from the second edition of Coronellis' Atlante Veneto (#86760-1). Professionally framed in giltwood, with matboard and uv plexiglass.

'Vincenzo Coronelli was Italy's most esteemed cartographer and globe-maker. A member of the Franciscan order, he also founded the society Accademia Cosmografica degli Argonauti. Coronelli's Atlante Veneto, a compendium of geographical and scientific knowledge in twelve volumes served as a continuation of Blaeu's Atlas Maior. The geographical information depicted was based on Coronellis' large gores of 1688, drawn from the manuscript globe constructed for Louis XIV in 1683. California is rendered as an island, New Zealand is shown with a hypothetical coastline stretching south-eastward towards Tierra del Fuego. The delineation of the Great Lakes is among the most accurately produced during the 17th Century. Shown in the upper left is the current day Bering Sea, including a representation of Terra di Iesso, the mythological land bridge which extended from Asia to Alaska.'
