ARTIST PROFILE: Maxim Bugzester (1909–1978) was a Polish-born painter whose artistic identity was forged through the elite circles of European modernism before he immigrated to the United States in 1935. Raised in Vienna, Bugzester showed precocious talent, studying under the German Expressionist Karl Schmidt-Rottluff at just fourteen, and later refining his craft in France under the mentorship of Pierre Bonnard and Georges Braque. His work is defined by a sophisticated synthesis of Fauvism and Expressionism, characterized by vibrant color palettes, bold landscapes, and "faceless" figures that evoke a sense of existential mystery. Despite serving in the U.S. Army during World War II and spending his later years teaching and exhibiting in New York City, Bugzester’s style remained deeply rooted in his European origins, blending subtle Cubist structures with a raw, stark manner of representation that captured both everyday scenes and profound human solitude.
