ARTIST PROFILE: Margaretta Mitchell is a Berkeley-based American photographer and writer whose work is deeply rooted in the Pictorialist tradition, focusing on formal elements of line and shadow in black-and-white portraits and still lifes. A Smith College graduate, she gained early technical experience as a research assistant to Edwin Land, the inventor of the Polaroid camera. Mitchell is perhaps most celebrated for her landmark project, Recollections: Ten Women of Photography, a traveling exhibition and book that brought critical attention to the contributions of major female photographers like Berenice Abbott and Dorothea Lange. Her extensive bibliography includes biographies and photographic histories, and her art is held in prestigious permanent collections, including the International Center of Photography and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
