Ivory Coast GURO wooden mask This carved wooden mask is a traditional work from the Guro (or Guru) people of the central Ivory Coast, known for its elegant, elongated features and sophisticated craftsmanship. The mask is characterized by a high, smooth forehead and finely arched eyebrows that meet at a long, narrow nose, leading down to a small, slightly open mouth. A defining feature of Guro artistry present here is the elaborate, multi-lobed coiffure or headdress, which is meticulously incised with fine linear patterns to simulate braided hair. The presence of small, almond-shaped eyes—sometimes inlaid with contrasting materials—and delicate scarification marks along the hairline reflects the Guro aesthetic ideal of refined beauty and spiritual presence. Traditionally used in sacred dances such as the Zaouli or Je, these masks represent specific forest spirits or idealized human figures, serving as a vital link between the community and the supernatural realm.
