Pair of Advertising Fans: The "Uncle Remus" Syrup and "Chocolate Eyes" Fans, early 20th century Advertising fans from the early-to-mid 20th century "Black Americana" which were distributed by local businesses like funeral homes, grocery stores, and general merchants as functional keepsakes before air conditioning became widespread. The "Uncle Remus" syrup fan, introduced around the 1920s, leverages the "Uncle" archetype and deliberate eye-dialect like "Dis sho' am good" to evoke a sense of Southern authenticity. Tthe "Chocolate Eyes" fan from Null’s Dairy uses exaggerated features of Black children as a visual pun to market chocolate-flavored beverages. Both are framed. They were not examined out of frame.
