ARTIST PROFILE: Carla Accardi (1924–2014) was a trailblazing Italian abstract painter and a vital force in the post-war avant-garde, best known as a founding member of the influential group Forma 1. After transitioning from early self-portraiture to rigorous abstraction, her career evolved through a series of radical stylistic shifts—from the monochromatic "Integrazione" series inspired by French Modernism to her pioneering use of Sicofoil, a transparent plastic material she used to create luminous "tents" (Tendas) that challenged the traditional boundaries of the canvas. Beyond her technical innovations, which deeply influenced the Arte Povera movement, Accardi was a committed feminist who co-founded the activist group Rivolta femminile in 1970, cementing her legacy as an artist who seamlessly blended formal experimentation with social provocation. Her work has been celebrated globally, with major exhibitions at the Centre Pompidou and MoMA PS1, marking her as a central figure in the history of 20th-century abstraction.
