CAMY ROCHER (Haitian, 1959-1981). Wedding Scene, circa 1970's, Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. Framed.

ARTIST PROFILE: Camy Rocher was Haitian painter, born in Baraderes. He moved to Port-au-Prince in 1970 and began his artistic career as an assistant framer at Galerie Monnin, where he was inspired by the art and mentored by painter Calixte Henri. A devout vodouiste, his work focused primarily on Vodou themes, specifically portraits of the Loa. In 1978, he was featured in the "Five Vodou Artists" show at the Institute Francais. Tragically, in early 1981, while preparing a solo exhibition of Loa portraits-including the sea spirits Agoue and La Siren-Rocher drowned while swimming near his home in Carrefour, Port-au-Prince.
