JOHN FRANCIS MURPHY American, 1853-1921 Tonalist Landscape Oil on board Oil on board, signed lower right. John Francis Murphy, often hailed as "the American Corot," created landscape paintings that are quintessential examples of American Tonalism, prioritizing poetic mood and atmospheric effects over literal geographic accuracy. His work typically features sparse, pastoral scenes—such as stark meadows, still ponds, or fall-shorn pastures—rendered with a restricted, neutral palette of earth tones, soft greens, and golden yellows. To achieve his signature "lyric potential," Murphy utilized a painstaking process of applying multiple layers of glaze, rubbing surfaces with pumice, and flattening pigments with a palette knife to create a rich, evocative texture. Whether depicting a "Gray Day" or a sunset "Where Sunlight Lingers," his paintings emphasize a sense of tranquil, often brooding repose, where the edges of trees and horizons dissolve into a hazy, unified light. ARTIST PROFILE: John Francis Murphy (1853 –1921) was a preeminent American landscape painter and a leading figure of the Tonalist movement. Often called "the American Corot," Murphy was largely self-taught, beginning his career as a billboard and theater scene painter in Chicago before moving to New York City in 1875. His early work reflected the influence of the Hudson River School and the French Barbizon painters, but his style eventually evolved into a more poetic, atmospheric approach characterized by a limited palette and a focus on "nature's brooding periods." He was particularly renowned for his intimate depictions of the Catskill Mountains, where he founded the Pakatakan Artist Colony in Arkville, New York. Murphy achieved significant critical and financial success during his lifetime, receiving numerous honors including the Inness Gold Medal from the National Academy of Design, where he was elected a full academician in 1887.
