EARTHENWARE JAR FROM TONALA, MEXICO. Burnished and hand-painted earthenware jar from Tonala, Mexico. Tonala has a long history of ceramic production, going back to the pre-Hispanic period. This jar is decorated with hand-painted designs, including floral motifs, stylized birds, and human faces. The human faces are incorporated into the design as three-dimensional elements, protruding from the surface of the jar. The jar has handles and a narrow neck, and it is displayed on a stand with a fringed edge. The technique used to create the shiny surface without glaze is called burnishing. Presented on a metal four legged base. - Height: 41 inches (including base). Base: 12 inches.

In fair condition. Item has a lot of chips, discoloration, and smudges.
