CONGOLESE LEGA WAREGA LUKWAKONGO BWAMI MASKS.. Set of two masks which originate from the Lega people (also known as Warega) of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). They are a significant insignia within the Bwami association. Lukwakongo masks are not traditionally worn on the face but are displayed in various ways during Bwami ceremonies, such as on special palisades, worn on the arm, or even dragged on the ground by beards during rituals. Lukwakongo masks are typically wooden masks, often characterized by a heart-shaped face with a stylized form, flat forehead, high arching brows, small eyes, and a long, flat nose. They are frequently coated with kaolin clay, giving them a distinctive chalk-white finish. - Length: 10.25 inches.
