FRENCH SCHOOL (Mid-19th century). Allegory of the French Republic, Commemorating the 1848 Revolution and Abolition of Slavery, Lithograph after the work of French artist Celestin Nanteuil (1813-1973) likely published in (circa) 1848 by Goupil Vibert et Cie; it was included in an album of 59 lithographs illustrating the French Revolution. The central figure is an Allegory of the Republic (Marianne) who has wings, symbolizing freedom and the expansive spread of the Republic's ideals and she is crowned with laurel leaves, signifying victory and honor. Lastly, the presence and depiction of Black figures are highly symbolic, reflecting the period's political decisions, most notably the final abolition of slavery in the French colonies in April 1848. - Image: 11.5 x 15.5 inches; sheet: 14.75 x 22 inches
