ARTIST PROFILE: Leonid Gechtoff (1883–1941) was a prolific Ukrainian-American painter known for his vibrant landscapes and "Orientalist" genre scenes executed with a signature heavy impasto technique. Born in Odessa, he received his artistic training in Russia before fleeing in his twenties to avoid military conscription, eventually finding a temporary haven in Cairo. His time in Egypt deeply influenced his subject matter, leading to a successful period painting North African marketplaces and mosques that earned him acclaim in the European art world. After traveling through Holland—where he was profoundly influenced by the work of Vincent van Gogh—and living briefly in Indonesia and the Philippines, Gechtoff immigrated to the United States in the early 1920s. Settling in Philadelphia, he became a U.S. citizen and established himself as a prominent figure in the regional art scene, frequently exhibiting at the Philadelphia Art Alliance and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. His style, a blend of Post-Impressionism and Expressionism, remains celebrated for its energetic texture and vivid color, and he is further remembered as the first teacher of his daughter, the pioneering Abstract Expressionist Sonia Gechtoff.
