ARTIST PROFILE: George Daniell (1911–2002) was a prominent American portrait photographer and painter whose work captured some of the most iconic figures of the 20th century. Born in Yonkers, New York, Daniell overcame a traumatic childhood to earn a degree in painting and photography from Yale University. Throughout his career, he worked for prestigious publications such as Time and Life magazines, producing intimate portraits of cultural legends including Audrey Hepburn, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Tennessee Williams. A gay man who lived openly for much of his life, he shared a forty-year partnership with artist Stephen Dorland and later a long-term relationship with Roy Oxley. Daniell’s legacy remains rooted in his ability to bridge the worlds of fine art and photojournalism, leaving behind a profound visual record of the era’s greatest artistic minds before his passing in 2002.
