ARTIST PROFILE: Joan Erbe Udel (1926–2014) was a prolific Baltimore-based painter and sculptor celebrated for her vibrant use of color and her significant impact on the regional art scene. Often referred to as "The Grand Duchess of Baltimore Painters," Erbe received her formal training at the Maryland Institute College of Art under the tutelage of Leonard Bahr and Louis Bouché. Born and raised in Baltimore, she balanced her creative pursuits with her personal life, raising three children across two marriages while achieving major professional milestones, including her first solo exhibition at the Baltimore Museum of Art in 1966. Over the course of her career, her work was the subject of more than sixty solo exhibitions, cementing her legacy as a cornerstone of Baltimore's artistic community until her death at the age of 87.
