ARTIST PROFILE: Tony (Peter) Agostini (1916–1990) was a distinguished French painter and lithographer whose artistic journey began in Bastia, Corsica, before he transitioned from an administrative career to the easel in 1946. A largely self-taught artist, Agostini's early work captured the rhythmic movement of Parisian crowds and nocturnal cityscapes, but he eventually pivoted toward landscapes, studio interiors, and the masterfully executed still lifes that defined his lithographic legacy. His aesthetic was a sophisticated blend of influences: he adopted the vibrant palette of Gen Paul—whom he met in Montmartre in 1944—while maintaining a structural rigor inspired by Paul Cézanne and the geometric leanings of Cubism. Throughout his career, Agostini became a fixture of the French art scene, exhibiting regularly at prestigious venues such as the Salon des Tuileries and the Galerie Charpentier’s "School of Paris" showcases. His reach extended internationally with solo exhibitions in New York and San Francisco during the 1960s, complementing a steady presence in major Parisian galleries like Galerie Visconti. After moving to Antony in 1957, Agostini continued to refine his craft until his death in 1990, leaving behind a body of work celebrated for its evolution from the bustling energy of post-war Paris to the quiet, disciplined beauty of form and color.
