JOHN GOULD (English, 1804-1881). Two works: "Sporadinus Elegans: St. Domingo Humming-Bird" and "Tufted Coquette: Lophornis ornatus". Set of two framed ornithological prints (circa 1849 – 1861), hand-colored lithographs or engravings, characteristic of 19th-century natural history illustration. The prints, both featuring hummingbirds, are set in gold-toned wooden frames with a white/cream French matting. The first image displays three predominantly green hummingbirds interacting with a vine of purple morning glories (Ipomoea), and the inscription below the image is faintly visible as "Sporadinus Elegans." The second, vertically oriented print features two hummingbirds with shades of rufous and green near a cluster of white or pale yellow orchid-like flowers, with the inscription "Lophornis ornatus" visible at the bottom. These prints appear to be from a collection, possibly John Gould's seminal work, A Monograph of the Trochilidae, or Family of Humming-birds. - Sight (as matted): 19 x 12 inches; frame: 28 x 21.5 inches
Estimate $1,000-1,500
