ARTIST PROFILE: Born in 1937 in Philadelphia, George Krause is a distinguished American photographer and educator known for capturing the profound complexities of the human condition. After studying various fine arts at the Philadelphia College of Art, Krause dedicated himself to photography during his military service in the late 1950s, initially documenting African American communities in the segregated South. Over his prolific career, his style evolved from traditional documentary work toward a more evocative and ambiguous aesthetic, often focusing on themes of mortality, sensuality, and mystery through subjects like cemetery monuments and religious statuary. A highly respected figure in the field, he established the photography department at the University of Houston and has seen his work collected by numerous major institutions. Now retired, Krause continues to live and work in Wimberley, Texas, leaving behind a legacy of imagery that remains, as curator Anne Wilkes Tucker noted, "vital to the human condition."
