Haitian Revolutionary Leader Toussaint Louverture (c. 1743–1803), circa 1833 engraving Unframed. This portrait depicts Toussaint Louverture (c. 1743–1803), the formidable leader of the Haitian Revolution and a towering figure of the 18th century. A former slave who ascended to the rank of general and revolutionary philosopher, Louverture orchestrated the successful uprising in Saint-Domingue that eventually abolished slavery and secured Haiti’s independence from French colonial rule. Often hailed as the "Black Spartacus," he earned a reputation as a brilliant warrior-statesman whose intellect and leadership drew comparisons to the great revolutionary heroes of the modern era. This specific engraving is of significant historical value, as it is widely regarded as one of the most accurate extant portraits of the Haitian hero. Sheet: 8 x 5 inches; Image: 3/5 x 5.25 inches
