AMERICAN SCHOOL. (19th century). The Ann Alexander Coming into Leghorn in 1807, Oil on canvas depicting the three-masted ship "The Ann Alexander" from New Bedford (Massachusetts). The ship is notable for having been rammed and sunk by a wounded sperm whale in the South Pacific on 20 August 1851. The incident likely influenced Herman Melville in the writing of Moby Dick as it did other writers such as William Whitecar and Thomas Beale. Inscribed across the bottom is: "April 1807 Ann Alexander of New Bedford Loum Snow Coming in Leghorn." Unsigned. Presented in a gilt frame.
