ARTIST PROFILE: Marty Knapp is a Point Reyes-based photographer who transitioned from a career in construction and manufacturing to full-time photography in 1988. Initially sustaining himself through portraits, weddings, and commercial darkroom services, Knapp dedicated his creative energy to capturing the dramatic light and landscapes of the Point Reyes National Seashore. This passion led to the opening of the Marty Knapp Photo Gallery in 2000, where he and his wife, Jean, continue to showcase his work to a global audience. While he spent 25 years mastering traditional silver gelatin printing in a wet darkroom, Knapp fully embraced the digital evolution in 2011. He now produces archival pigment prints using a modern workflow involving Adobe Lightroom and large-format Epson printers, often pairing a digital Sony body with legacy Canon lenses. Beyond his own artistic practice, Knapp is a dedicated educator, offering classes and coaching that focus on the nuances of composition and the effective use of light in black and white photography.
