FRENCH GOTHIC REVIVAL CARVED OAK FIREPLACE SURROUND,19th century, France. Foliate-carved crest comes to a point, issuing a fleur-de-lis shaped carving above the reverse breakfronted case with six spire finials; stepped-back arcaded and foliate-carved frieze flanked by projecting shield and crown carved panels raised on twist-turned columnar supports; stamped brass surround with similar foliate and columnar decoration - 98 in. x 80 1/2 in. x 25 in. Provenance: Obtained by current owner from a friend's country home near Limoges, France. Reputedly said to have been displayed at the Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne in Paris 1937.
Overall very good condition. Some separation throughout frieze; loss to upper molding behind right and left projecting columns; very few losses throughout
