ALEXANDRE-GABRIEL DECAMPS (French, 1803-1860). Pauvre Homme Noir (Poor black man), circa 1822. Pencil signed lower left hand corner. Black-and-white lithograph which depicts a figure on a rocky shore signed "Decamps" at the bottom left. The figure is a muscular, dark-skinned man standing on a rocky outcrop by the sea and is depicted with shackles around his ankles and a metal collar around his neck, indicating he is a slave. In the background, there is a ship on the water to the left, likely a vessel related to the slave trade. Given the subject matter-an enslaved man on a coast-and the artist's period, this print likely relates to the abolitionist movement or a scene from a region associated with the slave trade, possibly depicting a specific moment of despair or defiance. Unframed. Not mounted or laid down. - Image: 5 x 3.75 inches; Sheet: 11.5 x 8.5 inches
