ISIDORE JULES BONHEUR (French, 1827-1901). RACEHORSE AND JOCKEY, bronze with golden-brown patina - Height: 29 1/2 in. Estimate $12,000-15,000
The subject of this bronze was the Hungarian horse "Kincsem," the unbeaten winner of over fifty important races in the 1850s in England, France, and Austria. She was internationally renowned for being "long as a boat" and collected prizes "as if it were her hobby and a habit to do so." There is a bronze statue of Kincsem in the Newmarket Horse Racing Museum in England. Hungary issued a set of national postage stamps in the champion's honor.
