John McAllan Swan was a highly regarded animal painter of the Victorian era. During his career he exhibited over fifty animal paintings at the Royal Academy. The art historian Jeremy Maas in his definitive History of Victorian Painting wrote about Swan: "In his paintings, panthers and leopards stalk dark primeval jungles. He had an uncanny ability to evoke the sheer animalism of nature's wilder predators." Several of Swan's animal paintings are in the prestigious British Pictures Collection at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
