HARPER PENNINGTON (American, 1854 - 1924). VENICE CANAL SCENE, Oil on canvas. Signed with monogram at lower left. Verso has London canvas supplier's stamp and old label "J.M. Whistler". - 11 in. x 9 in.

PROVENANCE: From the artist's estate to London collector. NOTES: Whistler is represented in background, at his easel, under an umbrella. Pennington became an avid admirer of Whistler's work when he spent some time with him in Venice after the famous Ruskin trial. Pennington's monogram, like a cat's paw, is influenced by Whistler's butterfly signature.

Condition: Good condition, not lined. Slight stretcher stress. UV: Scattered small areas of well-done inpainting in building and slightly more along bottom edge.
