PORTRAIT OF GENERAL U.S. GRANT, 1865. Oval portrait, chromolithograph with oil paint by E.C. MIDDLETON, stamped on reverse with copyright and date - 17 in. x 14 in.

Copyright stamp on verso: "Warranted Oil Colors. Enter according to Act of Congress in the year 1865, by E. C. Middleton, in the Clerk's Office of the District Court for the Southern District of Ohio. Published by E. C. Middleton, Cincinnati, O." From a famous photograph of Grant, this image by Middleton, along with another of Lincoln, was extremely popular. Middleton's "oil print" process, produced an affordable "oil painting" for those wanting a portrait of the nation's heroes at the end of the Civil War.

Condition: No punctures through the canvas. Scratch running through top of picture down past one eye, tear/crease on one lapel, small tears/holes around entire edge, small tear to the side of one ear, faint scratches to surface throughout.
