AMERICAN LATE EMPIRE BOX-FORM SOFA,early-to-mid 19th century, mahogany, possibly Philadelphia. Backswept crest rail with flame mahogany veneer; buttoned upholstered back and loose seat cushion flanked by swirl-inlaid columnar arm supports; extended feet on compressed rings - 37 1/2 in. x 83 in. x 33 in. Estimate $1,500-2,000
The sofa survives in fair condition and would benefit from conservation to its veneered surface, which at present is marked with looses throughout. The structural integrity would be enhanced by strengthening the frame. We examined the sofa and found areas of prior repairs. The right exposed wood stile is fractured and will require attention.
We have not located a maker's label. Further, the columnar arms are inlaid with swirl patterns, and do not show evidence of having had finials.
