California artist Salome Teresa Knabenshue was born in Ohio in 1897, the daughter of balloon and dirigible pioneer A. Roy Knabenshue. In the early 1920s she moved to Southern California and attended the California School of Fine Art in Berkley from 1921 until 1923. Subsequently, she attended the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles from1925-50 and excelled in studio portrait classes there

While a draftsman for her brother's survey company, Knabenshue was actively involved in the Plein-Air Movement, that was prominent in California during the 1920s. She captured the California landscape with vivid colors and luminescent light. Her depictions of eucalyptus trees and desert valleys express the wild beauty unique to California.
