ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANNICA. Eleventh Edition, 1910, with three New Volumes, the Twelfth Edition, 1922. Cambridge University Press. 29 vols., black morocco with gilt-stamped decoration. With a Jacobean style beechwood stand Estimate $200-400
The Eleventh Edition, and the Twelfth and Thirteenth Editions, which are reissues of the Eleventh with the supplemental volumes, is still one of the great reference tools. It was the last Britannica to contain in-depth scholarly and historical information written by some of the best-known scholars of the day, while it was the first to be published complete, all at once. The Fourteenth Edition jettisoned much of the historical and academic content to accomodate 20th century information.
