This work was reproduced in the New York Times Magazine Section on April 11, 1937, in conjunction with an exhibition at the Downtown Gallery titled, "Children In American Folk Art", during April 1937. The child portrayed in the painting was evidently one of the first Portuguese settlers of Rhode Island.
Lined, craquelure throughout, surface debris embedded in varnish; stretcher stress on right side. UV: Heavy varnish makes possible inpainting difficult to detect, possible areas include: to left of sitter''s ear, to right of sitter''s face, in tallest tree, in sky at upper right, and scattered elsewhere in background.
