Sarah Tittle Bolton (1814-1893) and her family moved from Kentucky and settled in Indiana as early pioneers. She wrote poetry from a young age and became Poet Laureate of Indiana, was active in public affairs as a reformer, especially for women''s rights. Her husband, Nathaniel Bolton, was editor of the Indiana Democrat in Indianapolis, and later was appointed Consul in Geneva, Switzerland, by President Franklin Pierce. Sarah Bolton''s best-known poem "Paddle Your Own Canoe", was widely popular during the Civil War.
